Bills to pay, text books to buy, there’s no doubt going to university can put a strain on the bank balance.
Being awarded a scholarship by the NSW Farmers’ Association is not only helping Bachelor of Veterinary Biology / Bachelor of Veterinary Science student Elizabeth Tonge cover some of those expenses, it’s also put her in touch with a network of people as passionate about agriculture as she is.
Where did your interest in studying veterinary science come from?
I was brought up on my family’s dairy farm, located west of Casino. I have been heavily involved in the work on the farm including the milking, mustering and herd husbandry. This exposure has sparked my interest in animal health and animal production systems. It has also established my passion for working with animals.
My dairy upbringing also developed my interest in pathology and clinical diagnosis. This interest in disease and anatomy was further encouraged through my PDHPE and Agriculture subjects in year 12.
As a result of my keen interest in both animals and passion for all aspects of medicine, I decided that pursuing a career in veterinary science would be very rewarding and would allow me to positively contribute and work within the Australian agricultural industry.
Why did you apply for NSW Farmers’ Association Scholarship?
I thought applying would be an exciting opportunity to express my interest in Australian agriculture and could lead to many new opportunities and allow me to meet like-minded people who are also passionate about primary industry.
The $4,000 scholarship supports rurally minded students with the cost of studying and help them to pursue a career that will benefit rural communities and Australian Agriculture.
What difference will it make to your studies?
The scholarship will reduce the financial pressures associated with university and will allow me to study full-time.
Any tips for other students thinking about applying for future scholarships?
I strongly encourage any students who are considering applying to do so. The application process is very exciting, rewarding and opens up many opportunities for young people who are interested in Australian agriculture. I’d like to thank the NSW Farmers Association for their support.
