Prepare for exams and reduce your stress

Do you put in extreme study hours for your exams? Or perhaps studying makes you so anxious you procrastinate instead? Get ready for your exams early so you don’t get overwhelmed with everything you have to do. Here’s CSU Student Counsellor Katie Murrell-Orgill’s advice on how you can prepare for exams and keep the stress levels at bay.

Make a balanced plan

I often hear clients say “I aim to study for seven hours a day but it never works out”. Plans work better if you are realistic and include all your other activities. In fact, see what happens when you schedule your activities in first!

Factor in your commitments

Plan your classes, pracs, family and work, the stuff you will need to do regardless of what else is happening. Next, add in everyday tasks such as meals, sleeping and chores. Leave times blank in case something unexpected comes up.

Be realistic about when you can study

Now look at when you can study. You might have to cut back on some fun stuff to do all your study.

Have regular breaks

Studying for long periods plays havoc with your concentration. Take 5-minute breaks every hour when you study. Breaks will help you focus and perform better.

Take time to relax

Have a limited amount of “guilt-free” social and relaxation time, like watching your favourite TV show. These times will help your stress and anxiety levels.

Keep things in perspective

Remember one exam will not dictate whether you are a success or a failure. No one can be perfect all the time.
