Summer holidays are great for relaxing, catching up with friends and finally getting around to reading that book you’ve been meaning to. Although it’s hard to admit, four months of no uni can get pretty boring. So, why not read a few books to fill in time?

Lecturers at Charles Sturt University (CSU) have revealed their top suggestions to read over the summer (they never want us to stop learning, do they?).

White Teeth

Dr Ruth Bacchus, lecturer in English at CSU, suggests White Teeth written by Zadie Smith. Dr Bacchus said “It’s intricate yet sprawling, with great characters, some parts that make you laugh aloud, some knowledge to be picked up without you knowing it, some twists and surprises, and wonderful writing”. You can even find a copy at the CSU library.

Martin Luther: Renegade and Prophet

As a lecturer in History, Dr Michael Gladwin recommended Martin Luther: Renegade and Prophet by Lyndall Roper.

“Along with Jesus Christ and Adolf Hitler, Martin Luther is one of the most influential people who has ever lived. This acclaimed new biography of Luther is a rich and absorbing introduction to both the man and his monumental legacy” said Dr Gladwin.

Am I black enough for you?

Am I black enough for you? Written by Anita Heiss, was good enough to get double recommendations from both Associate Professor in Leadership, Dr Michelle Evans, and Director for the Centre of Law and Justice, Associate Professor Alison Gerard.

The book is based around the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 and its link to the journalist Andrew Bolt.

Dr Evans said “an excellent read for those looking to have a first-person insight into the challenges faced by Aboriginal people pushing against stereotypes in Australia today. Plus, Anita has a deadly sense of humour!”

Mortal Engines Quartet

If you read this one you better be ready to commit to a series. Jae Major, Senior lecturer in Education, believes Mortal Engines Quartet by Philip Reeve is the perfect choice. The series is “inventive and exciting with great characters and gripping plotlines – perfect for summer reading and re-connecting with the joys of a good book!

“The first book is about a fascinating, future post-apocalyptic world known as the Traction Era, where cities are built on huge traction engines that move around the landscape ‘eating’ other cities and taking their resources.” If you’re looking for a world to lose yourself in, then this series is for you.

No matter what you decide to read, books are a great way to escape reality or simply fill in your spare time. Even better, read in the sun so you can work on your tan and send those “#summerhols” snapchats, all at once.
