Ever heard of InterviewStream?

Landing a job interview is both exciting and nerve-racking. What if you stumble? Or say the wrong thing? Or worse, you get so nervous you can’t speak?

I had no idea what to expect at my first job interview. I stumbled countless times, and left the interview feeling embarrassed. Somehow, I got the job. But if I didn’t, I probably would’ve been even more anxious the next time.

This is where the CSU careers interview staff can help you. InterviewStream is a SSAF funded initiative aimed at developing interview skills by practicing and recording interviews online. For example, you might get asked to give a specific example of when you led a team successfully. Your answer is recorded, and then you have the option to play back the video and self-critique. You can even count how many ‘ums’ and ‘ahs’ were used, as well as using posture ratings.

Additionally, students have the option to send the video to the careers interview staff who provide real and expert advice. Book an appointment and you’ll receive coaching on how to use the InterviewStream tool, plus you’ll have the opportunity to ask how to ace an interview in person.

We spoke to Career Development Officer, Paul Worsfold, who encourages students to book an appointment as the first step to developing interview skills.

“Once students have the interview techniques down pat, they can continue developing their skills using InterviewStream until they get it right.

“Interview skills are important because a person needs to market themselves. They have to get their personal script correct. But the non-verbal cues are important as well.”

Recent CSU graduate, Lauren Jones, was one of many to receive advice from Paul, developing and practicing her interview skills for her upcoming career.

“I learnt that during interviews, I tend not to say ‘T’ and ‘S’ very well, and that I need to work on my posture. In an interview you have to sit high, market yourself and look presentable.

“The careers staff help you through the whole process and make sure you feel confident in an interview.”
