Luminosity Conference 2018

by Grace Stevens, Port Macquarie SRC Vice-President

CSU students attended the Luminosity Youth Summit at the Glasshouse in Port Macquarie, over three days in July. The 2018 theme focused on three key enablers towards success:

  1. Inspire
  2. Challenge
  3. Excel

A diverse panel of speakers drew on these keys and shared their journey to success, including Jessica Watson, Jack Wilson, Mike Rolls, Mikhara Ramsing and Angela Jay.

It was inspiring to hear their downfalls, challenges and achievements, reminding us that every path brings struggles, but they can be overcome!

Jessica Watson’s biggest challenge was breaking the stereotype of a young female being incapable of sailing solo around the world. Mikhara Ramsing’s challenge was coming to terms with her homosexuality, which resulted in her family disowning her. Their personal, raw experiences are a testament to overcoming adversity and persevering towards your dream.

My personal highlight was Mike Rolls – a humorous presenter who was struck by meningococcal septicaemia at the age of 18. Rolls captivated the crowd by discussing his journey of losing fingers and both his legs to the disease but was able to use his experience as a springboard into a greater meaning for life.

One of the most unique parts of Luminosity was when the speakers joined us for morning tea and lunch. This was an irreplaceable experience because we had the chance to ask them questions and build an extraordinary new friendship!
