Now that winter has officially arrived, the motivation to continue exercising disappears along with the sunshine. This is not the time to give up on exercise though!
Why is exercise so important for students?
- Exercise reduces stress and anxiety
- Exercise improves memory and cognitive functions
- Exercise increases energy levels, without caffeine or energy drinks
How to keep up an exercise habit during winter:
Warm-up indoors first
Before heading outside for a run, take 5-10 minutes to warm-up with star jumps, jogging on the spot and dynamic stretches. When you do head out the door, your body will be warm and ready to go.
Use your lunch break
If it’s dark when you get up for classes in the morning and it’s dark by the time you get home at the end of the day, switch up your schedule and work out at lunchtime instead.
Whether it’s a jog around campus, yoga on the lawn or a quick game of Frisbee with some friends, you’ll get your workout in and be energised and ready for an afternoon study session.
Workout at home
With a yoga mat and a set of dumbbells, you can skip the gym and do full-body workouts in the comfort (and warmth) of your bedroom.
Bodyweight exercises and yoga are perfect for the gear minimalists, while dumbbells add extra strength training by replicating many traditional gym exercises.
Recruit a friend
Having a buddy does wonders for accountability on the days you’d rather stay in bed. Knowing that you’re not suffering alone and the benefits of a social catch-up will have you putting on your sneakers in no time.
Lower your expectations
When you’ve already got a lot on your plate and battling the cold to maintain your workout streak is more of a hindrance than help, the last thing you need is to over commit.
Reduce your exercise regime to two – four days a week and, as long as you maintain the same duration and intensity of your workout, you’ll maintain your fitness levels through winter and into spring.
Focus on a goal
Remember why you started exercising in the first place. If you need a new goal to keep the motivation high, sign up a for an event or challenge your friends. Remember, summer bodies are made in winter!
