The importance of self-care

It’s that time of year when you’re starting to feel the pressure of assessments and events, one after the other.

Among all the university hype, it is important to take time out for yourself to refresh, relax and get into a focused mental state.

How to take time out and chill:

#1 Get outside

It’s so healthy to take a break from study and enjoy some fresh air – not only does it help you concentrate, but it gives your brain oxygen and fuel to study more efficiently.

Grab a friend and go for a walk around a local track; exercise releases endorphins and will put you in a positive mindset.

#2 One episode at a time

Put on an episode of your favourite Netflix classic. If you’re struggling to focus, giving your brain a rest in an episode-sized chunk is always a good idea.

You can even use Netflix as a reward for completing an effective study session!

#3 Treat yourself

Treat yourself to a nice brunch! Going out with mates for a meal and being social can make you feel so refreshed and give you the energy to persist with your studies.

It’s also comforting to know that people are in the same boat as you, if you’re feeling a little stressed about the uni work load.

#4 Spend time alone

Uni is such a social environment and it can be exhausting, constantly having to be around people, so give yourself a break. Take a seat and put on some music to relax.

Or if you’re feeling homesick and uni life is getting too much, take a weekend off and head home!

Being home with family can really put things into perspective and make you realise that while uni is important, it isn’t the be all and end all…

#5 Learn to say no

Saying no does not make you selfish, nor should you feel guilty.

Your health is the most important thing, so if missing out on that event or hang out and getting a good night’s sleep instead will rejuvenate you, then so be it!

It’s important to study hard, but don’t neglect taking care of yourself.
